6×112 MW Birecik Hydroelectric Power Plant and Birecik Dam

The Birecik Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant is located on the Euphrates river in the South Eastern part of Turkey. Birecik Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant is located on the Euphrates river in the South Eastern part of Turkey. Dam crest is more than 2.5 km. long and consist of earth embankment dams on the left and right banks of the river, having a concrete gravity dam section in between, which integrates the spillway and the intake structure to the powerhouse. The dam height is 62.5 m. Power house is equipped with six Francis turbines with 112 MW each, with a total capacity of 672 MW. An annual electricity production of about 2.5 billion kWh is anticipated. In addition, the 56 km2 reservoir is planned to be used for irrigation of 70,000 hectares of farmland. The project is implemented on a “finance-built-operate-transfer” bases, with an operation period of 15 years.

This is the first major project in Turkey to be implemented on finance-built-operate-transfer basis.
